VXi has exclusively licensed its core technology, invented by founder Ivan Vesely, Ph.D., from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. This license covers three issued patents. These patents claim a replaceable, re-collapsible medical device, a two-piece exchangeable valve, and the manipulations and means for withdrawing and re-inserting the devices. VXi has also filed additional patent applications on accessory tools and a large vessel vascular closure device. These are listed below:

VXi has also filed additional patent applications, described in the table below, and assigned to the company. One of these recent inventions, the biodegradable zipper, provides a novel means for rapid closure of large, high pressure blood vessels such as the aorta. This invention not only facilitates rapid valve exchange with the VXi valve but also may have broader applicability. Since it essentially eliminates time spent performing vascular closure, it reduces ischemic cross-clamp time and time on cardiopulmonary bypass the technology might be used for a host of other cardiovascular surgical procedures.
